BACKGROUND ::

Women's economic groups coordinating council (WEGCC) was established in 1995 by coalition of small groups of women in Tanzania. Since the establishment, WEGCC has undergone two phases. The first phase runs from 1995 to 1997 in which WEGCC aimed to coordinate and promote the activities of memeber groups. In 1998 WEGCC did a review on her mission with focus on women's status which indicated need to address women's gender and economic issues in their communities. This led to the second phase in which aggressive institutional growth characterized by diversfied projects as well as relationships with local and international organization is experienced. WEGCC carries out it's mission through mobilization ad organization, training in various business skills, collection of data, provision of advisory services to it's members such as assisting members in their access to setup and running of projects, strengthening their links with different organizations and government offices, increasing the knowledge base of members through information sharing.

WEGCC envisage communities with satisfactory livelihood in which women and men have equal rights and opportunities.

The structure of WEGCC runs from the grass roots where member groups are based to the national level.

WEGCC officially operates in ARUSHA, SINGIDA, TABORA & SHINYANGA.
